Apprenticeship

About

If a witch's identity is discovered by a human, the witch becomes a witch frog and must make that human her witch apprentice. Once the witch apprentice passes the final witch exam and is now officially a witch, then the witch frog retains her original form.

In order to become a legal witch, there are nine apprentice exams, proctored by examiner witches Mota and Motamota. All witch exams are held at nighttime except for the last witch exam, which is held in the morning and ends at sunset. The witch apprentice begins at level 9 and works her way down to the first test. The level of tests the witch apprentice passes determines the level of magic she is able to use.

This is not a definite description of the witch exams. All tests are subject to change, depending on how Mota and Motamota feel. No witch apprentice is required to take all the exams as well; Onpu reached level 4 after taking only three exams, and Pop was able to skip to level 6 after just one exam. Mota and Motamota decide which level to grant based on their judgment on how the exam was performed, but the Queen gets the last call in their decisions.
  • Level 9 Exam: Mota and Motamota request for something of their choice to be conjured. If the witch apprentice passes, she receives a fairy, a little magical sprite that assists her.
  • Level 8 Exam: The witch apprentice is assigned to find a designated area and stick a flag on it within the time limit. Mota and Motamota will ask for a weakness in their questionnaire, and then they will bring it into reality as a hindrance from placing a flag in the designated area.
  • Level 7 Exam: Doremi and the girls passed it without even taking the test, but for Hana-chan, she must use a map and fly to points where completing certain tasks will earn her rings. Once all the rings are retrieved, she must bring the rings back to Mota and Motamota. If she fails to meet the designated time limit, the map will disappear. ¹ After passing this exam, Mota and Motamota will grant the ability to communicate with plants.
  • Level 6 Exam: The witch apprentice is supposed to find a way to acquire magic beads after running out. By passing the exam, the witch apprentice receives an upgrade on her pollon, which is a combination of her old pollon and a musical instrument.
  • Level 5 Exam: The witch apprentice has to use magical clay and sculpt what Mota and Motamota want without them telling her what it actually is. (Hints are allowed to be given.)
  • Level 4 Exam: Mota and Motamota's candidates, the Tortoise and the Hare, race the witch apprentice in an obstacle course. The witch apprentice must beat both opponents in order to pass this test. As a reward, she receives an acknowledgment bead in her vial.
  • Level 3 Exam: The witch apprentice is put through a courage test and must endure past frightening ghouls, ghosts, and demons. As a reward, she receives an acknowledgment bead in her vial.
  • Level 2 Exam: Doremi and the girls passed this exam although Mota and Motamota changed the challenge into entertaining a room full of witches without the use of magic. For Pop, she had to figure out how to solve a problem by finding a source to all the problems occuring in a situation. As a reward, she receives an acknowledgment bead in her vial.
  • Level 1 Exam: The witch apprentice must help someone with magic and have that person thank her. If she passes the test, the witch apprentice is awarded with her own magical crystal ball, which works like a wand with unlimited magic.

Forbidden Magic

Magic has limitations — there are rules of what witches are allowed to use with magic. If any witch uses forbidden magic, there will be dire consequences that will affect the witch.
  1. Magic must not be used to heal others. Should magic be as a method of healing, the wounded would be healed, but the spellcaster will receive the same injury.
  2. Magic must not be used to manipulate people's hearts. Magic should not be used to change the way people think and feel. If this magic is used, the spellcaster will end up in a deep sleep for 100 years.
  3. Magic must not be used to revive the dead. If magic is used to resurrect dead beings, the spellcaster will trade lives with the dead. In other words, the spellcaster dies.

Forbidden Magic, Part II

I've heard debates on the questionable uses of Doremi and the girls' magical charms/food/items that may hint towards manipulation towards people's hearts. I disagree on this matter — what is forbidden is changing the feelings of a person. For example, if a girl is in love with a boy and the MAHO Dou's magic makes it so that the girl is no longer in love with the boy, that is forbidden. However, the MAHO Dou's magic enhances and makes the person's feelings stronger; their magic doesn't change the feeling, but only simply strengthens it. Thus, if the girl in the example mentioned is in love with the boy, the MAHO Dou's charms enhances these feelings and makes it so that she will feel courageous enough to confess. No manipulation of her feelings are there.
