Episode Title: Uncle Mick and his Sidekick
Original Episode: Hazuki-chan is Kidnapped!
Broadcast Date: February 18, 2006
The title of this episode was "Uncle Nick and the Sidekick" on television listings. When this episode was uploaded onto 4Kids.TV's website, it was titled "Uncle Mick and his Sidekick."
Changes
- Avant title cut for today is a scene of the Pappaya Brothers wondering how they should earn money. (20 seconds cut)
- Hazuki marks her calendar for the day her magic ban is supposed to end, and remembers (in flashback form) what the Queen told her in the previous episode. However, when she tries to get her magical items out, it doesn't work, and she realizes she has to wait until the day is over before she can use her magic again. The flashback uses footage from the previous episode with a flashback cloud around its edges. (38 seconds cut)
- The Pappaya Brothers originally weren't named, but they were credited as Pappaya Brother Aniki and Pappaya Brother Otouto ("Aniki" is slang for "older brother" and "otouto" roughly translates to "younger brother", signifying which brother is which.) In the dub, Aniki was renamed Mick and Otouto was renamed Joey.
- The Pappaya Brothers were originally discussing about their target, Hazuki's family. In the dub, they were talking about Aniki's "familial connection" to Hazuki and that by taking responsibility of Hazuki for the day, he'll be able to be on good terms with his "sister" and get her to lend him money. So, yeah, in the dub, Aniki is Hazuki's uncle, whereas in the original version they had no relation whatsoever.
- Hazuki was going to the MAHO Dou. In the dub, she was going to go to the museum with her uncle Nick.

 |
- The entire segment of the Pappaya Brothers spying on Hazuki in their car was mirrored.
- When Aniki's car first approaches Hazuki, he honks to her and she looks up. This was cut. (4 seconds cut)
- The car segment's still mirrored in the dub! But you probably suspected that.
- The rest of the scene before Hazuki went in the car was cut out. What happened was that Aniki asked Hazuki where the doctor's office was, because Otouto was in pain. Hazuki said that the doctor's office was right in front of him. (♥) When he realized his plan failed, Aniki faked a toothache and asked Hazuki where the dentist's office was. Since the dentist's office was on the path to where the MAHO Dou was, Hazuki decided to accept his ride. (40 seconds cut)
- The scene where the Pappaya Brothers are driving downtown is mirrored.
- Originally, Hazuki was giving directions to the dentist's office. In the dub, she is giving directions to the museum.
- Aniki reveals to Hazuki that she was being kidnapped, and Otouto holds a gun next to her head. (14 seconds cut)
- Okay, so... in the original, we know Hazuki's driven away because she's being kidnapped, right? Well, in the dub, her "uncle and his friend" were driving her back to their apartment because they couldn't afford admission into the museum.
- The text on the MAHO Dou's banners were changed so that they have "DoReMi Magic Shop" printed on them in the dub.
- The text on the signs near the Misora Apartments were removed in the dub. The main text on the building was changed into "Sunny Crest Apartments."
- In the original version, Aniki was giving orders to Otouto to tie Hazuki up with tape and keep an eye on her. In the dub, he apologizes for not being able to take her to the museum and offers to play some games in his apartment.
- The gun was edited out of Otouto's hand in the dub.
- Aniki was writing a ransom letter to Hazuki's family. In the dub, he was writing a letter to Hollywood.
- After Aniki spots Hazuki across the room, he storms over to her. (2 seconds cut)
- The Japanese text on the poster Aniki was writing on was removed.
- The text on Aniki's letter was replaced with random scribbles.
- Hazuki glancing at the clock was cut out. Instead, the shot zooming in was slowed down. (no time loss)
- Hazuki said that calling with a phone was much more easier than giving a ransom note, and then gave the Pappaya Brothers Doremi's phone number. In the dub, she said that her friends could make the money to help them.
- The letter/poster's text is still replaced in the dub.
- Aniki wanted 10 million yen. In the dub, he wanted $10,000.
- Lala and Majorika were wondering about what they should do when Doremi and Aiko left to rescue Hazuki. In the dub, Lala mentioned that today was the day Hazuki was going to the museum.
- A shot of the sign with the street name Aniki gave Doremi was cut out. (3 seconds cut)
- The sign behind Doremi and Aiko had its text removed in the dub.
- A custom transformation sequence replaced the original transformation sequence. For the fifty billionth time, it makes no sense because Doremi and Aiko aren't transforming at the MAHO Dou. (no time loss)
- Aiko's spell was originally, "10 million yen, come out!" In the dub, it was, "Reanne's rescue close at hand, all we need is 10 grand!"
- The 10 million yen Aiko conjured was edited into a $10,000 bill.
- Doremi's spell was originally, "10 million yen, come out!" In the dub, her spell rhyme is, "Reanne is waiting for us to pounce, so give us 10 grand, but in smaller amounts!"
- Aiko and Doremi couldn't come up with the money because they've never seen 10 million yen in their lives before. In the dub, it was simply because their magic didn't work.
- A shot of the apartment where Doremi sees Aniki shake Hazuki violently was cut out. (1 second cut)
- Doremi and Aiko originally chanted their spells and commanded, "Turn us into the police!" In the dub, their spell was, "Messing with our friend is the last straw, so now get ready for some shock and awe, make us officers of the law!"
- Aniki thought the cops were after him for kidnapping Hazuki. In the dub, he thought that it was because he hadn't paid the landlord yet.
- The entire car chase, starting from when the Pappaya Brothers throw Hazuki into the car all the way up until the Pappaya Brothers escaped was mirrored. This also included the magic casting sequences. Note the gun Otouto's holding as he gets into the car!! That was edited out in the dub.
- Doremi's spell was originally, "Stop time!" In the dub, it was, "Like a bud that's been bubbled inside a raindrop, grieve, if you please, and make time stop!"
- Aiko originally called her own spell, but not her command. In the dub, her spell rhyme is, "Before they get out of town, blow their car down!"
- Doremi originally didn't give a command. In the dub, her spell rhyme is, "Pedal no more, 'cause this means war!"
- Aiko had no command, but in the dub, it was, "That army tank's a little too sweet, get them out and on their feet!"
- Doremi still doesn't have a command in the original version, but in the dub, it was, "We can't go through this chase again, just turn these crooks into gentlemen!"
- In the original, Aiko makes a jab at Doremi's spell since she changed the vehicle into a carriage; she informs Doremi that she was probably thinking of a "tomato" instead of the verb "to stop" (tomaru). In the dub, they were wondering why Hazuki was laughing.

 |
- Otouto's chopsticks were edited into a fork in the dub.
- Aniki was the one who made the ramen. In the dub, it was Otouto.
- In the flashback, the sign for the Pappaya Brothers' act was edited to say "Mick and Joe Show."
- The sign in the agency's room had its text removed in the dub.
- The end of the flashback was cut out. In this scene, a rich man placed his hand on the Pappaya Brothers' shoulders, and the scene fades out to present time. (5 seconds cut)
- The Pappaya Brothers' joke was edited. Originally, they yelled, "PAPA! YAAAN!" In the dub, they make a joking pun. ("Hey, Jojo, how's Cinderella?" / "She can't play sports, Mick." / "Why is that, Jojo?" / "'Cause she runs away from the ball!")
- The first couple of scenes where Aiko and Doremi appeared were cut out. When the Pappaya Brothers first see Doremi and Aiko, Otouto pulls out his gun, doing the whole "you've seen us, so now you're going to die" thing. Everyone, including Aniki, becomes scared when he pulls the trigger... but the gun turned out to be a trick gun. Aniki smacks Otouto in the head for using it. (17 seconds cut)
- Aiko's spell was originally, "Punish the kidnappers!" In the dub, her spell rhyme is, "Looks like it's time for another rhyme, make these chumps pay for their unspeakable crime!"
- Hazuki pleaded Aiko to bring the Pappaya Brothers down from the tree because they've learned their lesson. In the dub, she says that it was because Aniki was her uncle.
- The part where Hazuki begs the Queen to let her use magic again was slightly cut. These scenes included flashes of the Pappaya Brothers, and some parts of Hazuki pleading Queen. (9 seconds cut)
- Hazuki's spell was originally, "Please, save the Pappaya Brothers!" In the dub, her spell rhyme is, "By the power of Lumina, cleanly found, please land each of them safely on the ground!"
- The Pappaya Brothers thought that the whole thing was an illusion and that the foxes (Majorika and Lala in disguise) were tricking them. In the dub, they believed that the foxes saved them and the forest was haunted.
- When the Pappaya Brothers dropped Hazuki off at her house, they apologized for kidnapping her. In the dub, they apologized because they weren't able to take her to the museum.
- Text was added onto the Pappaya Brothers' license plate, which would say,"MICNJO."
- The text on the sign for the Nakayama Doctor Clinic was erased.
- The ending was cut out. In the dub, the scene faded into black after the Pappaya Brothers drove off, cutting off the epilogue for the episode. In the cut sequence, it showed the witch trio watching the Pappaya Brothers' comedy act in front of the window of the TV store. While Aiko commented that the brothers may be the SOS Trio's rivals, Hazuki giggled at their act, which weirded out Doremi and Aiko. The Pappaya Brothers finished their act, and the last scene of them was snapshotted into a photo. (24 seconds cut)

Opinion
By the way, in case you kids don't get it, yes, 4Kids did change the plot of this episode. They changed it so that Hazuki was never kidnapped at all and that her kidnappers were her uncle and his friend. Now, I know some people aren't happy with the huge butcher, but you have to admit, they did a pretty good job at covering up the fact that Hazuki was originally kidnapped.
So here are the differences in the plots:
| Original |
Dub |
| Hazuki gets kidnapped by the Pappaya Brothers because she's a rich girl. The brothers hope that the ransom money will fund their act and put them back in business. Hazuki tricks them into calling Doremi's house to let her know where she is, and Doremi quickly understands she's been kidnapped. |
Hazuki is supposed to go to the museum with her uncle, but he's flat broke so he can't take her. He also wants to babysit her so he can rub elbows with his sister (Hazuki's mom) and have her lend him money for his comedy act. Hazuki offers to help him get money with the help of her friends. Doremi misunderstands Aniki's phone call and really thinks Hazuki was kidnapped when she's not. |
This episode was full of edits, censors, and cuts wherever there was a gun involved. I hated doing this episode comparison. Seriously. I was like, "Geez, 4Kids, how much did you do?!"
Also, I could've sworn when this episode first aired on TV, Aniki was renamed "Nick." Huh. Was this episode re-edited, or were my senses fooling me? |
